BONITA UNIFIED ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM
California’s Curriculum Frameworks and Common Core State Standards provide guidance for both content and instructional strategies, driving teaching and learning in our schools. Not all standards are given equal weight; specific standards are prioritized because they support lifelong learning, support learning in other disciplines, or support success in subsequent grade levels and/or courses.
Bonita Unified’s adopted core curriculum is the set of textbooks/ student materials that the District has adopted from state-approved lists. These materials are not necessarily used in their entirety, nor are they used in sequential order. Lessons are evaluated for their ability to support students' mastery of the grade-level standards. When needed, supplemental materials are developed or purchased by the district, schools, or teachers.
Curriculum Currently Used to Support Teaching and Learning:
Benchmark Advanced: Benchmark Advanced is the state- and Board-adopted core English Language Arts program that covers all TK-5 ELA/ELD standards and TK learning foundations. Materials provide integrated English language arts instruction.
University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) Foundations: Foundational reading skills in phonics are taught using the UFLI Foundations handbook and related resources in kindergarten through second grade classrooms. The explicit and systematic phonics program teaches how sounds connect to letters using a predictable lesson structure.
Handwriting Without Tears: Handwriting Without Tears teacher and student editions are provided for Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, first grade, and third grade classrooms. Digital access for teacher presentations is also available. These materials support students to develop automaticity in printing and handwriting skills.
Eureka Math Squared: Eureka Math Squared is an evidence-based, coherent mathematics program for students in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade. Concepts are connected intentionally across lessons and grades, building long-term understanding. It is an inquiry-based program that includes explicit instruction and differentiated support.
Social Sciences: Bonita Unified has adopted the following programs to enable effective teaching of the History Social Studies Standards:
- Benchmark Advanced Social Studies Supplements for kindergarten and first grade
- McGraw Hill Impact for second, third, and fifth grades
- Studies Weekly for fourth grade
The mixed adoption enables Bonita students to successfully master grade-level HSS standards. The robust digital components allow students and parents to access the curriculum on any device away from school. The programs also include components for our English Language Learners (ELLs), students needing remediation, and students needing more challenging material.
Science: The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are taught using several resources, including CK-12, Generation Genius, and Mystery Science. Resources are implemented in accordance with the District-Developed Science Matrix.
Physical Education: California mandates at least 200 minutes of physical education every 10 school days in first through sixth grade, and also requires daily recess. Bonita Unified provides certified PE teachers for fourth- and fifth-grade students. Classroom teachers in grades 1 through 3 provide 100 minutes of PE instruction each week.
